IKXISULUNTUK (SWOLLEN FOOT): A LIVE RADIO PLAY
Adapted from Oedipus the King by Sophocles

Angel Rose Artist Collective begins its 2024-2025 season with a partnership with Dandelion Collective DC, Tamachtiluyan Shuchikisa An Ne Nawat, and Trans-Latinx DMV for their Main Stage Production, Ikxisuluntuk (Swollen Foot): a live radio play, based off of Sophocles' Oedipus the King, adapted to English & Nawat by Petrona Xemi Tapepechul, with Nawat language support by Anastacia Lopez Lopez (1962-2024). This production will be presented in English and Nawat, with English and Spanish subtitles, beginning on Saturday, September 26, 2024 until Sunday, October 13 at Dandelion Collective DC, 3417 14th St. NW, Washington, DC 20010. This production is being produced with support of Tamachtiluyan Shuchikisa An Ne Nawat (TSANN), a virtual Nawat-language school founded by first language speaker from Wizapan, Senzunat in western El Salvador, Nanzin Anastacia Lopez Lopez (1962-2024). TSANN is a DC-based project by ARAC, the DMV chapter of la Asociación Nacional Indígena Salvadoreña (ANIS; translation: the National Association of Indigenous Salvadorans), and Trans-Latinx DMV. This production is also produced with additional support by Trans-Latinx DMV and Dandelion Collective DC. Ikxisuluntuk (Swollen Foot): a live radio play is presented in honor of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages.
Trans-Latinx DMV (a chapter of TransLatin@ Coalition) is a Two-Spirit Trans Womxn led organization that centers the needs of Black & Indigenous Trans-Latinx people living in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
Dandelion Collective DC is a co-working space organized and run by queer couple, Aly and Kris Oseth. Kris is a psychotherapist who specializes in LGBTQ communities, substance use, and personal training. Aly is community organizer and AASECT certified sexuality educator whose focus is adult learning and sexual pleasure. They are combining their experiences, skills, and interests to create a space dedicated to individual and communal healing, learning, and growth.
About Ikxisuluntuk (Swollen Foot):
The Cast of Indigenous Root Radio (Nelwat Ixkamewe Tanuzalis) presents another audio drama. This time, a Nawat and English adaptation from Oedipus the King by Sophocles. Tiutećan, the city of the Gods, is suffering a terrible curse: the loss of their ancestral language. A foreigner, Ikxisuluntuk (Swollen Foot), a fluent Nawat speaker arrives and quickly becomes the King of Tiutećan. But a life-long curse follows him, and he begs for answers from the city Elders. They send Ikxisuluntuk on a journey of self-discovery, betrayal, and self-doubt.
“Ikxisuluntuk (Swollen Foot): a live radio play combines my love for the Nawat language and classical theater.” says the Director and Adapter, Petrona Xemi Tapepechul, “It is the last project I collaborated with first-language Nawat speaker, Nanzin Anastacia Lopez Lopez, before her passing on May 1, 2024. Today, there are less than 50 first-language speakers of Nawat alive, making Nawat a critically endangered language as declared by the United Nations. Oedipus the King has been adapted and translated to dozens of languages worldwide, and now, we have a Nawat-language version and a bilingual Nawat/English version of the play available for our communities who are working to revitalize this language for future generations. Nawat will always be here with us! Ne Nawat yawi nemi nin tuwan sempa!”
This play is adapted into Nawat and English from Oedipius The King by Sophocles, with Nawat language support by Anastacia Lopez Lopez, celebrating the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, and is made possible with financial support from 360Healthx.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
Sophocles (born c. 496 bce, Colonus, near Athens [Greece]—died 406, Athens) was, along with Aeschylus and Euripides, one of classical Athens’s three great tragic playwrights. The best known of his 123 dramas is Oedipus the King, which has been translated to over 30 languages including: English, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Mandarin, Japanese, among others.
ABOUT THE ADAPTER
Petrona Xemi Tapepechul (she/her) from the Nawat people of Guxgatan, the land known internationally as El Salvador, is se Siwayul- a heart of a Womxn. She is the Managing Director of Angel Rose Artist Collective. She is the author of Metzali: Siwayul Shitajkwilu and My Woman Card is anti-Native & other Two-Spirit Truths. Xemi has written various plays, including: The Cosmic Twins, Timumachtikan Nawat/Aprendamos Nawat/Let’s Learn Nawat, Kanshul (Act of Faith), Protect & Preserve, Yek Tunal Kuskatan, Illegal NDN, Yultaketzalis, and Siwayul (Heart of a Womxn). Her work has been featured across various theatre companies, universities, community groups, and the internet. ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
Ikxisuluntuk (Swollen Foot): a live radio play is directed by Petrona Xemi Tapepechul (she/her), with dramaturgy by Elle Marie Sullivan (she/her). Tapepechul also acts as Co-Light, Co-Projections, Co-Costume, and Set Designer for the production.
Arlin Tellez (they/she) is Stage Manager; ARAC’s PR & Marketing Director, Renee Browne (they/he/she) is Co-Costume Designer; ARAC's Artistic Director, Ahanu From the Blood (they/them) is Co-Light Designer; and Phoenix Lion Sweeney Fen (fae/faer/faer {neo}, it/it/its, & hit/hit/hits {archaeo}) is Sound Designer & Co-Projections Designer.

Petrona Xemi Tapepechul is also the Understudy for Tagitani (the seer) and Ićgamasateguyu Guxgatanćaneh (the shepherd).
